Like reflections in the rice-paddies the faces of streetwalkers in the darkness are exposed by the autumn moonlight
Streetwalkers, known as tsujigimi (crossroads girls) or yotaka (night hawks), were low class prostitutes who would approach men on the streets at night.
They were mostly older women, heavily made up, and would typically dress in black kimono while covering their heads with tenugui (hand towels) and carrying woven rush mats.
The woman in this picture is wearing the standard yotaka outfit, but for a streetwalker she is extremely attractive.
Hitotose was a renowned prostitute based in the Honjo area of Edo, and according to ‘Shinpen Kahai Hyakuninsen’ (One Hundred Selected Poets: New Edition)*, she was kind-hearted and accomplished at waka poetry and calligraphy.
