Moon at Musashino Plain
The ancient plain of Musashino, with the moon shining brightly over open fields of autumnal grass that stretch as far as the eye can see, was a frequently-chosen subject matter in Yamato-e (classical Japanese) painting.
In his depiction of vast Musashino Plain, however, Yoshitoshi chooses quite deliberately to focus on a single fox.
The picture shows the fox grooming itself amidst the pampas grass growing in the wilderness of the plain.
The fox is staring intently at its reflection, cast onto the surface of the water by the light of the full moon.
What could it be thinking?
Perhaps it is contemplating taking on human form.
